mandate

Women in View is an association of media artists, scholars and industry professionals whose goal is to recharge the issue of gender equity; and to develop contemporary, action-based strategies that can be implemented across a broad spectrum of production, policy and artistic arenas.

Our Mission

The mission of Women in View is the creation of greater diversity and balance in Canadian media, from the standpoint of employment equity, creative authority and gender representation.  We believe that including women is good for business and good for our communities.

Our Goals

  • To raise awareness of the extent and implications of gender imbalance in the media industries;
  • To increase the proportion of women employed in media, particularly in positions of creative authority;

To achieve these goals, we have identified 3 objectives for our 2010 programs:

    Objective 1: Information-Gathering

    Map the status of women both behind the scenes (particularly in positions of leadership and creation) and on screen,

    Generate a constructive cross sector dialogue addressing the factors and dynamics inhibiting the full participation of women in media industries; and their remedies;

    Objective 2: Building Awareness

    Promote awareness of the facts, and an appreciation of the cultural, social, economic and political costs, of gender inequity in Canadian film and television industries, both within the media sector and in the general public.

    Objective 3: Effecting Systemic Change

    Generate a range of practical, effective and sustainable strategies to overcome systemic obstacles to women’s full participation in media industries, each tailored to specific facets of the industry, policy and educational sphere.

    Build partnerships and foster multi-sector dialogue and collaboration to ensure the realization of these goals.
