Biography
Marsha Newbery is an award winning producer and director, and is the President of Mars Entertainment. She has worked extensively in documentary production and has also produced the dramatic film Playing For Keeps (2008 – CTV, Lifetime Movie Network) to critical acclaim.
Marsha Newbery was born in the UK and immigrated to Canada as a child. Growing up in Winnipeg, Marsha moved to Vancouver in 2000 and started working in media in 2001 when she had the opportunity to be an intern with the Canadian Film and Television Producers Association’s national mentorship program. Her first position was as a Business Affairs manager and Associate Producer for the awarding winning Avanti Pictures in Vancouver. While at Avanti Pictures she helped to produce 5 documentary films including the Gemini Award winning “Suzuki Speaks” starring Canadian environmental icon David Suzuki. Since then she has been a recipient of the British Columbia Film Producer Internship in 2002, a B.C. Film Banff Television Festival Internship in 2003, and CTV Banff Television Festival Fellowship Award in 2005. After starting Mars Entertainment in 2004, her first independent documentary, The Rock and Roll Kid (CBC) garnered a Leo award for Best Documentary in 2005 and was nominated for Best Documentary at the prestigious Yorkton Film Festival. Her second film, the one-hour documentary, Tailor Made, (CBC) won best film at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. In 2007 she produced the first of two documentaries on mental illness with Dr. Paul Termansen – an expert on the treatment of bipolar disorders. Not Just a Bad Day and Family Matters, went on to win various awards including Silver Chris Award at the Columbus International Documentary Festival and an honorable mention at the acclaimed Voice Awards in Hollywood California.
Marsha is currently finishing her Masters degree in Communications at Simon Fraser University where she is studying gender in the media workforces of television, film and gaming. She is also the current Managing Director of Women in View, a national non-profit agency dedicated to advancing women in screen-based media.
